What this is. A risk-factor estimate, not an epigenetic clock — those measure DNA methylation and need a laboratory. It compares your answers against effect sizes from large population studies, using the conservative end of each published range. Population associations applied to one person are approximate by nature, so treat the direction and the breakdown as the useful part, not the decimal place.

How this is calculated
Each answer contributes a signed number of years, and those years are added to your chronological age. The contributions come from effect sizes in large prospective cohort studies — UK Biobank for walking pace, the pooled smoking-cessation literature for tobacco, Holt-Lunstad's meta-analyses for social connection, and the NICE waist-to-height threshold for body composition.
Where a study reports a range, this model uses the conservative end. Observational associations are confounded — people who walk briskly differ from people who do not in ways no adjustment fully captures — and a calculator that tells everyone they are twenty years younger is entertainment, not information. The total is capped at twelve years younger and twenty years older for the same reason.
What makes the breakdown more useful than the headline number is that it is additive. You can see that smoking costs seven years and social isolation two and a half, and decide where the effort goes.
